MT PENDOPO, a single hull tanker, roughly 160 meters in length, caught fire whilst discharging a cargo of Naphtha on 27th January 2008. Initial attempts by the vessel’s crew to control the fire proved futile with fire engulfing the accommodation area and causing several explosions. Fortunately there was no loss of life and the next day the vessel was disconnected from the SBM loading arm and towed away in a Northerly direction, where she dropped anchor at a safe distance from the SBM and subsea pipelines. With assistance of several local fifi-tugs, the fires were completely extinguished on 8th February. After obtaining permission for a site visit on 13th February, personnel from SVITZER Salvage Asia established that the poop deck was just below the waterline and pump room, machinery spaces, lower accommodation, slops tanks as well as aft fuel tanks were flooded with water. An estimated quantity of 12000 m3 of Naphtha was said to be remaining on board. Following initial stabilisation works by a local contractor, a Request For Tender and several clarification meetings SVITZER Salvage Asia was contracted on 16th May to transfer the cargo of Naphtha into a lightering tanker . The project commenced the next day with mobilisation of a 14 men global salvage team and equipment being put on standby in Singapore for sea transport to Balongang. Upon arrival of people and equipment in Balongan and with the lightering tanker safely moored alongside , the actual operation to offload cargo started on 31st May ,The remaining cargo was transferred to another tanker in just 6 days, Meanwhile the salvage team and equipment were demobilised.
